Durgesh Nandani Okra Seeds — Abelmoschus esculentus

This packet contains 15 seeds of the okra selection sold as Durgesh Nandani. Okra is a warm-season annual with hibiscus-like flowers and elongated edible pods. Seeds only are supplied.

Also known as: Ladies' finger, Bhindi, Bhendi, Vendakkai, Bamia, Gumbo, Quimbombó, Gombo, Quiabo and Hibiscus esculentus.

Sow after frost danger has passed and the soil is thoroughly warm, or start in individual pots shortly before transplanting time. Soaking seed in room-temperature water before sowing can help hydrate the hard coat. Plant about 2 cm deep, keep evenly moist during emergence, and handle young roots gently.

Choose full sun, fertile well-drained soil, and enough space for airflow. Water at the root zone during dry weather, especially while plants flower and set pods. Harvest pods frequently while they are young and tender, using gloves if the leaves or pods irritate the skin. Cut pods with a short stem rather than pulling; overlooked pods quickly become fibrous.

Okra pods are used in curries, stews, frying, and other cooked dishes. Seed-grown plants can vary somewhat within a selection. Keep unused seed sealed, labelled, cool, dry, and protected from humidity and direct sunlight.
