About this seed

About Aegle marmelos

Aegle marmelos, commonly called bael, is a tree in the citrus family Rutaceae. Kew records it as an accepted species native to the Indian subcontinent. It develops a strong woody framework, aromatic foliage and the characteristic hard-shelled fruit for which the tree is widely known.

Sowing guide

  1. Use a clean, free-draining seed mix and containers with open drainage holes.
  2. Sow the seeds shallowly, cover lightly and water gently so the mix is evenly moist rather than saturated.
  3. Keep the sowing warm in bright, indirect light. Protect it from cold nights and drying winds.
  4. Check moisture regularly. Vent covered trays to reduce stagnant humidity.

Seed-grown plants are naturally variable. Give seedlings time to build several true leaves before moving them individually, and disturb the developing roots as little as possible.

Seedling care

Move young plants gradually into stronger light. Aegle is associated with warm subtropical and tropical conditions and performs best with sun, warmth and drainage. Water when the upper layer begins to dry, but do not leave the container standing in water. Pot on only when roots hold the mix together.

This is a long-term tree project rather than a quick seasonal crop. Plan a sunny final position with room for a woody crown, or maintain the plant in a large container while it is young.

Seed note: Seeds are living material. Germination speed and percentage vary with seed age, temperature, moisture and local growing conditions. Keep a small record of sowing date and treatment so you can adjust the next batch.
