About orchid tree
Bauhinia variegata is an accepted species in the Fabaceae family. Kew records it as a shrub or tree native from the Indian subcontinent to southern Yunnan. Its paired-lobed leaves and large orchid-like flowers make it a distinctive ornamental tree.
Sowing guide
- Use a clean, free-draining seed mix and a container with open drainage holes.
- Lightly abrade one small part of the hard seed coat without cutting the embryo, then soak in room-temperature water.
- Sow about one seed-width deep, water gently and keep warm in bright, indirect light.
- Keep the mix evenly moist but never saturated, and ventilate covered trays.
Hard-coated seeds can start at different times. Leave sound seeds undisturbed while the medium remains fresh.
Growing on
After emergence, increase light gradually and pot seedlings separately before roots become crowded. Water thoroughly, allow excess water to drain, and let the surface begin to dry before watering again.
Seed-grown trees are naturally variable and may not reproduce every feature of a selected parent. Check local climate, mature size and planting restrictions before moving a tree outdoors.
