About this species
Broussonetia papyrifera is an accepted species in the Moraceae family. Kew records it as a tree native from India to Korea and Indo-China and associated mainly with the temperate biome. It is known as paper mulberry because its bark fibre has a long history of use, while its leaves can vary strongly in shape even on one plant.
Sowing guide
- Use a clean, fine seed mix that holds modest moisture while draining freely.
- Scatter the small seeds over the surface and cover only very lightly.
- Mist gently and keep the container warm in bright, indirect light.
- Maintain even moisture and ventilation; remove any cover gradually after emergence.
Small seed needs close contact with the medium but not deep burial. Keep the labelled tray undisturbed and avoid heavy watering that moves seed into clumps. Thin crowded seedlings to improve air flow.
Seedling care
Increase direct light gradually and pot seedlings on when they are sturdy enough to handle. Use a well-drained mix and water when the upper layer begins to dry. Young plants should be protected from severe cold.
Paper mulberry can spread vigorously and is considered invasive in parts of its introduced range. Check local rules before outdoor planting and prevent unwanted seed or root spread. Seed-grown plants can differ in sex, form and leaf shape.
