About this seed

About this species

Canavalia gladiata is an accepted Fabaceae species recorded by Kew as a climbing annual or perennial associated mainly with wet tropical habitats. It is widely known as sword bean, a name referring to the long, broad pods. The vigorous vine develops large trifoliate leaves and needs support early in growth.

Sowing guide

  1. Soak the large intact seed in room-temperature water; lightly abrade a small point only if the coat remains hard and unswollen.
  2. Use a deep individual pot filled with loose, free-draining medium.
  3. Plant about one seed thickness deep and water gently.
  4. Keep warm and evenly moist under bright light, providing a support as soon as the shoot begins to extend.

Large legume seed needs moisture to enter the coat but is vulnerable to decay in stagnant, airless medium. Scarification must be shallow and controlled. Do not cut deeply or leave the pot continuously saturated.

Seedling care

Move young vines gradually into stronger light and give them a firm trellis or other support. Pot on before roots bind tightly. Water consistently during active growth while maintaining free drainage and protection from cold.

This is a vigorous climber requiring space and structural support. Check local guidance before outdoor planting because tropical legumes may naturalise in suitable regions. The listing is for cultivation only and makes no claim that seeds, pods or other parts are safe for food, feed or medicinal use.

Seed note: Seeds are living material. Germination speed and percentage vary with seed age, storage, temperature, moisture and local conditions. Label the sowing date and treatment, keep the medium clean, and allow a reasonable period before judging the batch.
