About this seed
Clary sage (Salvia sclarea) is a biennial or short-lived perennial: in the first year it forms a rosette of large, soft leaves, and it flowers only in the second year, on spikes 1–1.5 m tall. The packet holds 15 seeds.
Also known as: Clary sage, Clary, Muskatellersalbei (German), Sauge sclarée (French), Esclarea (Spanish). Family Lamiaceae.
Expect flowers in year two
Do not dig up a plant that shows only leaves in its first summer. The flower spikes, pale pink, lavender or white with coloured bracts, appear in the second year.
Sowing
- Sow in early spring or autumn in well-drained soil.
- Press the seed onto the surface; it needs light to germinate.
- Germination takes 14–21 days under good conditions.
Site
Full sun, in well-drained sandy or loamy soil. It suits temperate climates and tolerates dry, poor soil once established. Leave spent flowers if you want it to self-seed, or remove them to extend flowering.
Scent and uses
The whole plant has a musky scent, strongest in the flowers and leaves. The oil distilled from the flowers is used in perfumes and cosmetics, and the leaves occasionally flavour teas and soups. The flowers attract bees and butterflies.
What you get
One packet of 15 Salvia sclarea seeds. We do not state a germination percentage for this lot.
