About this seed
About Job's tears
Coix lacryma-jobi is an accepted grass species in the Poaceae family. It forms upright, leafy stems and the distinctive hard, bead-like structures that give the plant its common name.
Also known as: Adlay, Coixseed, Tear grass, Chinese pearl barley, Hato mugi, Yiyi, Lágrimas de Job, Larmes de Job, Coix lacryma and Coix agrestis.
Sowing guide
- Soak seed in room-temperature water before sowing.
- Use a clean, moist but free-draining mix in individual cells or a deep tray.
- Sow about one seed-width deep, water gently and keep warm.
- Provide bright light after emergence and do not let young seedlings stand in stagnant water.
Seeds within one batch may start at different times. Maintain steady conditions without repeatedly disturbing the sowing.
Growing on
Move established seedlings into a sunny position gradually. Provide adequate root space, regular moisture and drainage as the grass gains height. Shelter tender young plants from cold.
Job's tears can complete a substantial seasonal growth cycle. Confirm local cultivation guidance before outdoor planting, because behaviour and winter survival vary by climate. This listing is for botanical growing and decorative interest, not a food-use claim.
Seed note: Seeds are living material. Germination speed and percentage vary with seed age, temperature, moisture and local growing conditions. Record the sowing date and treatment so later batches can be adjusted.
