About this seed
Grow an uncommon Andean ornamental grass from seed. Each packet contains 20 seeds of Cortaderia nitida, an accepted species in the grass family Poaceae. In parts of its native range it is known by names such as sigse or carrizo.
Cortaderia nitida is a perennial, clump-forming grass native from Costa Rica through the northern Andes to Peru. Botanical records place it mainly in montane forest margins, páramo grasslands, wetlands, and disturbed high-elevation ground. It produces narrow, rough-edged leaves and open terminal panicles with pale, glossy, feathery spikelets. Mature culms may approach 1–2 m under suitable conditions.
Sow the fine seed thinly on moist, free-draining seed compost. Press it gently onto the surface and cover only very lightly. Keep the tray bright, evenly moist, and well ventilated, avoiding both standing water and severe drying. Pot seedlings on carefully once they are large enough to handle. Acclimatise young plants gradually before moving them into their permanent position.
Choose an open site with good light and free drainage. Because this species comes from elevated tropical and subtropical habitats, protect young plants from abrupt heat, hard frost, and prolonged waterlogging while they establish. Mature size and flowering time will vary with altitude, temperature, and season.
The leaf margins of Cortaderia grasses can be sharp. Wear gloves when handling established plants or cutting back old foliage. Seed-grown plants may vary naturally in size, plume colour, and growth habit.
