About this seed

About Kashmir cypress

Cupressus cashmeriana is an accepted conifer in the Cupressaceae family. Kew records its native range in Arunachal Pradesh and classifies it as a temperate tree. Mature specimens are admired for their tall form and long, softly drooping sprays of blue-green foliage. Kew also reports a Near Threatened conservation assessment, making careful, documented cultivation especially appropriate.

Sowing guide

  1. Use a clean, sharply drained mix in a tray or small pots.
  2. Sow the seeds shallowly and cover with a thin layer of fine medium.
  3. Water gently and keep evenly moist, never saturated.
  4. If warm sowing produces no response, a measured period of cool, moist stratification can help some temperate conifer seed lots.

Conifer germination is affected by collection date, storage and dormancy. Label each treatment and inspect periodically so the mix remains moist and aerated.

Seedling care

After emergence, provide bright light, cool fresh air and protection from scorching heat. Water carefully at the base and avoid keeping delicate stems constantly wet. Pot on once seedlings are sturdy enough to handle, preserving the root system.

This is a long-lived tree with significant mature size. Before planting outdoors, assess local climate, drainage and available space. Plants raised from seed can vary in foliage tone and form, and should not be assumed to duplicate a selected garden specimen exactly.

Seed note: Seeds are living material. Germination speed and percentage vary with seed age, temperature, moisture and local growing conditions. Keep a small record of sowing date and treatment so you can adjust the next batch.
