About this species
Jacaranda mimosifolia is an accepted Bignoniaceae species native from Bolivia to north-western Argentina. Kew records it as a subtropical tree and notes a Vulnerable conservation assessment. It is widely known as blue jacaranda for its fine bipinnate foliage and seasonal masses of violet-blue flowers.
Sowing guide
- Use a clean tray of fine, free-draining seed mix and level the surface.
- Lay the papery seed flat and cover with only a very thin layer of medium.
- Mist gently and keep warm in bright, indirect light.
- Maintain even surface moisture and fresh air without waterlogging.
Thin, winged seed should not be buried deeply. Gentle watering prevents it from moving into clumps. Keep the sowing labelled and allow normal variation in emergence rather than disturbing the tray.
Seedling care
Provide bright light after emergence and introduce direct sun gradually. Thin crowded seedlings, then pot on while roots are still easy to separate. Protect young plants from frost and cold saturation.
Jacaranda becomes a sizeable tree with a broad crown and can naturalise in favourable climates. Check local rules and invasive-species guidance before outdoor planting, and allow sufficient distance from structures. Seedlings will vary naturally.
