About this seed
Jerusalem cherry (Solanum pseudocapsicum) is an ornamental evergreen shrub grown for glossy foliage, small white flowers and bright berry-like fruits that mature through yellow, orange and red. The fruits are decorative only: all parts of the plant are toxic if eaten, so keep plants and seed packets away from children and pets.
Also known as: Jerusalem cherry, Madeira winter cherry, Christmas cherry, Korallenkirsche, Korallenbäumchen, Cerisier d'amour and Paslen lozhnoperechny.
Start the seeds in a clean, free-draining seed compost. Sow shallowly, cover lightly and keep the medium evenly moist rather than waterlogged. Warm, bright conditions support germination. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, pot them on individually. Grow in full sun or very bright light, using a fertile, well-drained mix. Outdoor plants should be protected from frost; the species is also well suited to containers that can be moved indoors.
Water when the surface begins to dry, but do not leave the pot standing in water. Good light encourages compact growth and fruit colour. The plant forms a naturally bushy specimen and may be lightly pruned to maintain shape. Flowers are followed by long-lasting round fruits, making this a distinctive patio or houseplant for seasonal displays.
Package options: 20, 40 or 100 seeds. Botanical identity has been reviewed as Solanum pseudocapsicum, also known as Jerusalem cherry, winter cherry or Madeira cherry. Seeds are supplied for ornamental growing, not for consumption.
