About this seed

About the sausage tree

Kigelia pinnata is retained here as the familiar seed-trade name. Plants of the World Online treats it as a synonym of Kigelia africana subsp. africana, a tree of tropical and southern Africa in the Bignoniaceae family. Mature trees are notable for long hanging flower stalks and heavy, elongated fruits.

Sowing guide

  1. Sow fresh-looking seed in a clean, open mix that drains freely while holding modest moisture.
  2. Cover lightly, water gently and keep the container warm.
  3. Provide bright light without exposing a closed propagation tray to harsh midday sun.
  4. Maintain even moisture and regular ventilation; avoid waterlogging.

Authoritative African horticultural sources describe propagation from seed. Germination is not a reason to overwater: warmth, air and a clean medium are more useful than constantly saturated compost.

Growing on

Once seedlings are established, increase light gradually and pot them separately before roots become crowded. This is a tropical tree that needs warmth and space. In cooler climates it should be protected from frost and may need greenhouse or conservatory conditions.

Choose the planting position carefully. A mature Kigelia can become a substantial tree and its large fruits should not hang above paths, seating or parked vehicles. The image shows the exact species and its characteristic fruits; it is not a photograph of the seed packet.

Seed note: Seeds are living material. Germination speed and percentage vary with seed age, temperature, moisture and local growing conditions. Keep a small record of sowing date and treatment so you can adjust the next batch.
