About this seed
About golden rain tree
Koelreuteria paniculata is an accepted species in the Sapindaceae family. Kew records it as a temperate tree native from China to Korea. Mature trees develop compound foliage, yellow flower panicles and papery, lantern-like fruit capsules.
Sowing guide
- Use a clean, free-draining seed mix and a container with open drainage holes.
- Soak seeds in room-temperature water, then sow about one seed-width deep.
- Keep evenly moist in bright, indirect light and ventilate covered trays.
- If sound seeds remain dormant, a period of cool, moist conditioning can help complete natural dormancy.
Do not discard firm seeds early; this tree can germinate unevenly.
Growing on
After emergence, increase light gradually and pot seedlings separately before roots become crowded. Water thoroughly, allow excess water to drain, and let the surface begin to dry before watering again.
Seed-grown trees are naturally variable and may not reproduce every feature of a selected parent. Check local climate, mature size and planting restrictions before moving a tree outdoors.
Seed note: Seeds are living material. Germination speed and percentage vary with seed age, temperature, moisture and local conditions. Label the sowing and keep notes so later batches can be adjusted.
