About this seed

About this species

Peltophorum africanum is an accepted Fabaceae species native from southern Democratic Republic of the Congo to southern Africa. Kew records it as a shrub or tree of seasonally dry tropical habitats. Common names include African wattle and weeping wattle; mature plants develop a rounded crown and showy yellow flowers.

Sowing guide

  1. Abrade a small point of the hard coat carefully, stopping before the pale inner tissue is damaged.
  2. Soak the treated seeds in room-temperature water before sowing.
  3. Plant in a deep container of free-draining medium and cover lightly.
  4. Keep warm with even moisture and fresh air, allowing all excess water to drain.

Hard legume seed may remain dormant when water cannot enter the coat. Treat seeds individually and label the method used. Do not leave the pot standing in water, and do not repeatedly disturb a sound sowing.

Seedling care

Move seedlings gradually into stronger light and pot them on before the root system becomes congested. Water thoroughly during active growth, then allow the upper layer to begin drying. Protect young plants from hard frost.

Plan for a woody tree with a spreading crown rather than a small seasonal plant. Outdoor performance depends on climate and drainage. Check local guidance before planting outside the native range and allow adequate distance from structures.

Seed note: Seeds are living material. Germination speed and percentage vary with seed age, storage, temperature, moisture and local conditions. Label the sowing date and treatment, keep the medium clean, and allow a reasonable period before judging the batch.
