About this seed

About Phoenix sylvestris

Phoenix sylvestris, often called the silver date or sugar date palm, is an accepted species in the Arecaceae family. Kew records its native range in south-western India and Sri Lanka and describes it as a tropical shrub or tree. Its arching feather-like leaves give established specimens a light, elegant crown.

Sowing guide

  1. Soak cleaned seed in room-temperature water and replace the water regularly.
  2. Sow in a free-draining medium in a deep container.
  3. Cover lightly, water well and allow the pot to drain completely.
  4. Keep warm with consistent moisture and fresh air.

Germination may be spread over time. Keep the medium warm and clean, and resist the urge to uncover the seed. A developing palm root is easy to damage.

Growing on

Give seedlings bright light while acclimating them gradually to direct sun. Tall pots help the first roots develop without tight coiling. Once the plant is actively growing, water thoroughly and allow some surface drying between waterings.

This species is suited to warm conditions and needs protection from frost when young. It can become a substantial landscape palm, so consider mature size, leaf spread and access before choosing a permanent position. Seed-grown palms should be expected to show natural variation.

Seed note: Seeds are living material. Germination speed and percentage vary with seed age, temperature, moisture and local growing conditions. Keep a small record of sowing date and treatment so you can adjust the next batch.
