Growing from Seed

Sowing: Sow seeds about 6-8 mm deep in fertile, well-drained soil. Keep the seedbed evenly moist while seedlings establish, but avoid waterlogging. Where winters are mild, autumn sowing may provide a useful cool growing window; in colder regions, spring sowing can begin when the soil is workable.

Position: Choose a sunny site and prepare the soil with organic matter where needed. Spinach performs best when it can establish and make leafy growth in cool weather. Warm conditions and lengthening days can encourage bolting, when the plant shifts from leaf production toward flowering, so use the coolest practical sowing window for your climate.

Spacing: Thin or place plants roughly 7-8 cm apart, with about 30 cm between rows. Adequate spacing improves access to light, supports airflow, and makes watering and leaf picking easier. For container growing, use a pot with drainage holes and enough surface area to avoid crowding.

Care: Water consistently enough to keep the root zone from drying out for long periods. Apply water to the soil rather than relying on light surface sprinkling. Check containers more frequently because they can dry faster than garden beds, and remove competing weeds carefully while plants are small.

Harvest: Begin harvesting when the plants have produced usable leaves. For a longer picking period, remove larger outer leaves and allow the smaller central leaves to continue growing. Leaves may also be cut while leaving the central growing point undamaged, which can allow additional growth.

What You Receive: One labelled packet containing 200 Matador Spinach seeds. This product contains seeds only, not seedlings or harvested leaves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should spinach be grown in hot weather?

Spinach is generally treated as a cool-season vegetable. Prolonged warmth and long days can speed bolting, so choose the coolest suitable planting window in your region.

Can spinach be grown in a container?

Yes. Use a container with drainage, fertile growing medium, practical plant spacing, and regular watering. A wider container makes it easier to grow several plants without crowding.

How can the leaves be harvested?

Pick outer leaves individually for an extended harvest, or cut leaves while keeping the central growing point intact. The useful harvest size depends on how the leaves will be used and on local growing conditions.
