About this species
Terminalia arjuna is an accepted Combretaceae species native from the Indian subcontinent to Myanmar. Kew records it as a tree growing mainly in seasonally dry tropical habitats. It is commonly known as arjun or arjuna and develops a broad crown, smooth pale bark and woody fruits with prominent longitudinal wings.
Sowing guide
- Soak the clean winged fruit or seed unit in room-temperature water before sowing.
- Use a deep pot filled with a coarse, free-draining propagation mix.
- Set it shallowly, on its side or upright, and cover no deeper than roughly its own thickness.
- Keep warm and evenly moist with good airflow, allowing all excess water to drain.
Commercial seed lots may contain the dry winged fruit surrounding the seed. Do not crack aggressively or injure the contents. Clean off loose debris, label the pot and allow time for moisture to penetrate the woody covering.
Seedling care
Move seedlings gradually into stronger light and pot on before roots become constrained. Maintain consistent moisture during early growth while preventing stagnant conditions. Protect young plants from frost and severe cold.
