Burley 9/10 Nicotiana Seeds

Burley 9/10 is a named variety of Nicotiana tabacum, listed here as seed for raising the plant in a garden or in containers. Nicotiana tabacum is a warm-season annual with large, broad leaves and branched stems that carry clusters of tubular flowers. The product card for Burley 9/10 does not yet describe its height, leaf shape or flower colour, so this page stays with the species and avoids claims that belong to this variety alone.

These are names for the species. Burley 9/10 is the variety name used in the store listing; it is not a separate species, and the listing does not say where or by whom the variety was developed.

Sowing Burley 9/10

The notes below are general guidance for Nicotiana tabacum. They are not test results for a particular seed lot, and no exact temperatures, germination percentages or day counts are given because none are saved for this variety.

• Surface sowing: Nicotiana seed is close to dust in size. Scatter it thinly over moist, fine seed-starting mix and press it gently into contact with the surface. Do not bury it.
• Light: the seed needs light to germinate, so a covering layer of soil works against it. Place the tray in a bright position.
• Moisture: keep the surface evenly damp. A fine mist or watering from below keeps the tiny seeds from washing together.
• Warmth: the genus comes from warm climates, so a warm room suits the seed tray better than a cold windowsill.
• Crowding: very fine seed tends to come up in dense patches, so thin the seedlings early.

From seedling to garden

Young Nicotiana seedlings are small and develop slowly at first. Give them strong light so they stay compact, and feed them lightly once true leaves have formed. Because the species is frost-tender, start the seed indoors ahead of your last frost date and move the plants outside only when frost is behind you. Harden them off over several days before planting out.

Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. The leaves of this species are broad, so space the plants widely enough for air to move between them. As the height of Burley 9/10 is not recorded, watch your own plants and adjust staking and spacing to what you see rather than to a fixed figure.

What this listing does not say

The card does not give a germination rate, a viability period, a measured seed size or a lot test date. Those details are left out instead of being guessed. The text also makes no statement about the history of the variety or what its plants will look like in the photographs, since neither has been confirmed.

FAQ

What conditions does Burley 9/10 need to germinate from seed?

Like other Nicotiana tabacum seed, it needs light, steady moisture and warmth. Lay the seed on the surface of the soil without covering it, and keep the surface damp. Exact temperature and timing figures are not recorded for this variety.

When should I sow Burley 9/10?

Sow indoors ahead of the last frost in your area, then transplant outdoors once frost has passed, because the species is frost-tender. The card gives no set number of weeks, so follow your local frost dates.

How tall does Burley 9/10 grow?

The card does not state a height for this variety. Nicotiana tabacum is a fast-growing annual, and final size depends on light, soil, spacing and season, so measure your own plants rather than expecting a set figure.
