Sigarny 7 Nicotiana Seeds

This is a variety of Nicotiana tabacum, the cultivated Nicotiana plant. It is a tall, upright plant with large, broad leaves, and the notes below collect what the product card says about its size, leaf colour and the way the seeds are sown and grown.

About the plant

• Species: Nicotiana tabacum, grown from seed.
• Habit: robust and upright, reaching roughly 6 to 7 feet (about 1.8 to 2.1 m) in height.
• Leaves: large and broad, up to about 24 inches (60 cm) long and 12 inches (30 cm) wide. They are light green while the plant is growing.
• Adaptability: described as adaptable to various climates, with consistent performance when the plant is given proper care.

This is a plant for a gardener with room to spare. A stem of 6 to 7 feet carrying leaves of that size takes up a good deal of space, so it suits an open bed or a large container better than a crowded border. The product card gives no figures for flower colour, days to maturity or yield, so none are stated here.

Growing this variety from seed

• Sowing indoors: start the seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost date in your area.
• Light: press the seeds lightly onto the soil surface and do not cover them. They need light to germinate, so a covering of soil would work against them.
• Soil: well-drained, fertile soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Working organic matter into the bed before planting supports growth.
• Sun and water: give the plants full sun and water consistently, keeping the soil moist but never waterlogged.
• Transplanting: move the seedlings outdoors after the last frost, once they are large enough to handle.
• Spacing: the card does not give a distance. Because the mature plant is tall and its leaves are about 24 inches long, leave generous room between plants so the foliage has space and air can move through the row.

Keep a note of your sowing and transplanting dates. The card gives no germination time or days to maturity for this variety, so your own records are the most useful guide for planning the next season in your climate.
