Virginia Bright Leaf Nicotiana Seeds

Virginia Bright Leaf is a variety of Nicotiana tabacum, a warm-season annual in the nightshade family (Solanaceae), offered here as seed for growing the plant. The product card currently lists the name and the species only. Details such as plant height, leaf shape and flower colour have not been recorded yet, so this page describes the species and how its seed is normally handled, and it does not invent traits for this particular variety.

Virginia Bright Leaf is the name of this variety as listed by the store. The words "Bright Leaf" are part of that name, and the card does not say what they refer to, so no leaf colour or leaf type is claimed here.

Growing Virginia Bright Leaf from seed

Nicotiana seed is dust-fine and needs light to germinate. These are general guidelines for the genus, not measurements taken from a specific seed lot.

• Sowing: press the seeds gently onto the surface of moist, fine seed-starting mix and leave them uncovered. Burying the seed works against it.
• Moisture: water from below or with a fine mist, so the tiny seeds stay where they were placed instead of washing into clumps.
• Warmth and light: keep the tray warm and in bright light while the seeds germinate and the seedlings develop.
• Timing: because the plant is frost tender, seeds are normally started indoors several weeks before the last expected frost, and seedlings are moved outdoors only after the frost has passed.
• Thinning: once seedlings have their first true leaves, thin or transplant them into individual pots so each plant has room.
• Site: a sunny, sheltered position with well-drained soil suits the species.

Space and site planning

Plants of Nicotiana tabacum develop large leaves and an upright stem, so they need space for air to move between them. The exact spacing and final height for Virginia Bright Leaf are not recorded on the card, so it is sensible to give each plant generous room and to adjust after seeing how the first plants develop. A sunny bed or a large container in a warm, sheltered spot is a reasonable starting point.

What is not yet recorded

No seed specifications have been saved for this variety yet. For that reason this page does not state a germination percentage, a viability period, a germination temperature, a time to emergence or a seed size. The origin of the variety and its days to flowering are also not documented on the product card, so they are left out rather than guessed. The photographs in the gallery have not all been reviewed against this variety, so this text makes no claims about how the plants in them look.

FAQ

How do I sow Virginia Bright Leaf seeds?

Place them on the surface of moist, fine soil and press them in lightly without covering them. Nicotiana seed needs light to germinate, so it should not be buried. Keep the tray warm and evenly moist.

When should I sow Virginia Bright Leaf?

The plant does not tolerate frost, so seeds are usually started indoors several weeks before the last expected frost in your area. Seedlings go outdoors once the frost risk has passed. The product card does not give a more exact schedule, so local conditions are the best guide.

How tall does Virginia Bright Leaf grow?

The height of this variety is not recorded on the product card, so we do not give a figure. Nicotiana tabacum as a species forms a tall, leafy annual, so allow room above and around each plant, and note the real height in your own growing log.
