About this seed
Virginia Shirey Tobacco Seeds (Nicotiana tabacum)
General Description:
Virginia Shirey is a high-quality flue-cured tobacco variety, renowned for its bright, golden leaves and naturally sweet, smooth flavor. Originating from traditional Virginia tobacco regions, this variety is widely used in premium cigarette blends for its mild taste and excellent burning properties.
Plant Characteristics:
Virginia Shirey grows up to 5–6 feet (1.5–1.8 meters) tall with long, narrow, light green leaves that cure to a bright golden-yellow hue. The leaves are smooth, slightly oily, and have a fine, silky texture, making them ideal for flue-curing. The plant produces delicate pink flowers in late summer and thrives in warm, sunny climates.
Taste and Benefits:
Virginia Shirey offers a mild, smooth, and naturally sweet flavor with subtle earthy undertones. Its high sugar content and low nicotine levels make it perfect for blending in premium cigarettes, providing a light, pleasant smoking experience with a clean finish.
Cultivation Recommendations:
Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Lightly press seeds onto the soil surface, as they require light for germination. Maintain a temperature of 75°F (24°C) and keep the soil moist. Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days. Transplant outdoors after the last frost, spacing plants 2–3 feet apart. Virginia Shirey thrives in full sun and well-drained, fertile soil. Regular watering and occasional fertilization promote healthy growth. Harvest leaves as they mature from the bottom up, and flue-cure them in a controlled environment to develop their smooth, sweet flavor.
Uses and Benefits:
Ideal for crafting premium cigarettes, Virginia Shirey is prized for its mild, sweet flavor and excellent burning qualities. It’s also suitable for blending in light pipe tobacco mixtures.
