About this seed
Yellow Cherry is a golden-yellow cherry tomato (Solanum lycopersicum, family Solanaceae). The packet holds 100 seeds, and the photographs on this page show this cultivar.
Also known as: Cherry tomato, Tamatar, Thakkali, Tomate, Pomodoro, Pomidor, Love apple, Solanum lycopersicum var. cerasiforme, Lycopersicon esculentum var. cerasiforme and Lycopersicon esculentum.
Sow into soil at 20–30 °C
Seedlings appear in about 6–8 days when the soil is 20–30 °C. Cold soil slows tomato seed sharply: at 15 °C it takes about two weeks, at 10 °C about six weeks, and near 5 °C or at 40 °C almost nothing germinates. Indoors, cover the seed with 3–6 mm of seed-starting mix.
| Soil temperature | Days until seedlings appear |
|---|---|
| 5 °C | little or no germination |
| 10 °C | about 43 |
| 15 °C | about 14 |
| 20 °C | about 8 |
| 25–30 °C | about 6 |
| 35 °C | about 9 |
| 40 °C | little or no germination |
Figures are for tomatoes in general, measured with seed sown about 12 mm deep. The soil range that suits germination best is 16–29 °C.
Start indoors, then wait for warm nights
Sow indoors 6–8 weeks before the plants go outside. Move them out only when nights stay above 7 °C. Seedlings that spend days at 16–18 °C and nights at 10–16 °C are more likely to give misshapen, catfaced fruit. Fruit set is poor below 13 °C and above 32 °C.
Give the vine a stake
Yellow Cherry grows as an indeterminate vine: it keeps growing and fruiting until the season ends. Set a 1.8 m stake 20–25 cm deep when you transplant, space staked plants 35–50 cm apart (60–90 cm if you leave them unstaked) and pinch out side shoots at 5–10 cm. Staking and pinching can bring the first harvest a week or more earlier.
Water evenly, rotate the bed
Plan on at least 8 hours of direct sun and soil at pH 6.0–6.8. Uneven moisture contributes to blossom-end rot, and heavy rain after a dry spell can crack the fruit, so keep the soil evenly moist. Do not plant where tomato, potato, pepper or eggplant grew in the last two years.
When to expect fruit
The first ripe fruit comes about 60–70 days after transplanting, counted from the day the plant goes outside rather than from sowing.
Keeping the leftover seed
Tomato seed stays usable for about 4 years when kept cool, dark and dry. That is a general figure for the species; we do not state a germination percentage for this packet.
