Acacia tortilis is the established trade synonym; Plants of the World Online accepts Vachellia tortilis. This Fabaceae shrub or tree is native across Africa, Sinai and the Arabian Peninsula and is characteristic of desert and dry shrubland habitats. Mature plants often develop the familiar flat or umbrella-shaped crown.
Sowing guide
- Lightly abrade a small point of the hard seed coat without cutting the embryo.
- Soak treated seeds in room-temperature water and note which ones take up moisture.
- Sow in a deep pot of very free-draining medium and cover lightly.
- Keep warm and evenly moist until emergence, never saturated.
Physical scarification is intended only to let water through the coat. Work carefully and stop as soon as the outer layer is breached. Untreated hard seed can remain dormant for longer.
Seedling care
Give seedlings strong light gradually and excellent drainage. Water thoroughly during active growth, then allow the upper medium to dry. Protect young plants from prolonged cold and wet conditions.
The species is adapted to dry climates but young container plants still need consistent care while roots develop. Plan for thorns, a woody crown and long-term outdoor space. Check local rules before planting outside its native range.
