About this seed
Green Amaranth Seeds — Amaranthus viridis
Also known as: Green amaranth, Chaulai, Cholai, Thotakura, Mulai keerai, Callaloo, Bayam, Rau dền, Bledo and Amarante.
It is a warm-season annual with upright stems and green leaves, grown as a leafy vegetable in many tropical and subtropical gardens.
The seed is very small. Sow shallowly on a finely prepared, moist surface and cover with only a thin layer of soil or compost. Water with a gentle spray so the seed is not displaced. Warm soil encourages emergence. Once seedlings are visible, provide strong light and thin crowded areas so the remaining plants have room to branch.
Grow in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly during establishment and prolonged dry weather, but do not leave roots in saturated ground. For tender foliage, begin cutting young leaves and shoot tips while plants are actively growing. Repeated light harvests allow regrowth; older flowering stems become firmer. Where self-seeding is unwanted, remove flower heads before mature seed falls.
Use only correctly identified, cleanly grown foliage as a vegetable and cook it as you would other leafy greens. Store the purchased seed packet securely closed, labelled, cool, dry, and out of direct sunlight.
