About this seed

About white-bark acacia

Acacia leucophloea is retained in the title as the familiar trade name. Kew treats it as a synonym of the accepted Vachellia leucophloea. This warm-climate legume tree develops pale bark, paired thorns, fine compound foliage and rounded pale flower heads.

Sowing guide

  1. Use a clean, free-draining seed mix and a container with open drainage holes.
  2. Lightly abrade one small part of the hard seed coat without cutting the embryo, then soak the seed in room-temperature water.
  3. Sow about one seed-width deep, water gently and keep warm in bright, indirect light.
  4. Keep the mix evenly moist but never saturated, and ventilate covered trays.

Hard-coated seeds can start at different times. Leave sound seeds undisturbed and avoid overwatering while waiting.

Growing on

Increase sun gradually once seedlings are established. Use a free-draining mix and avoid prolonged wetness around young roots. Handle and position plants with care because stems can carry thorns.

Plan for a woody tree adapted to warm, seasonally dry conditions. Confirm climate suitability and local planting rules before outdoor establishment.

Seed note: Seeds are living material. Germination speed and percentage vary with seed age, temperature, moisture and local growing conditions. Record the sowing date and treatment so later batches can be adjusted.
