About this seed

About this species

Ficus benghalensis is the accepted botanical name for the Indian banyan, a member of the Moraceae family. Kew records the species as native to the Indian subcontinent and as a tree of seasonally dry tropical habitats. Mature banyans are famous for branches that can form descending aerial roots and additional supporting trunks.

Sowing guide

  1. Fill a clean tray with a fine, free-draining propagation mix.
  2. Sow the minute seeds on the surface and press them into contact without a heavy covering.
  3. Moisten with a fine mist and keep warm in bright, indirect light.
  4. Vent covered trays regularly and keep the surface moist rather than waterlogged.

Because the seeds are tiny, strong watering can bury or wash them away. Germination and early growth benefit from steady warmth, light and a clean surface. Reduce humidity gradually once seedlings are established.

Seedling care

Transplant only when seedlings can be handled safely. Provide good light, warmth and drainage, and protect young plants from cold. Increase direct sun in stages so tender leaves do not scorch.

A banyan is a landscape-scale tree with powerful roots and a very wide potential canopy. It is unsuitable close to buildings, drains or confined paving. In cooler climates, young plants may be maintained in containers under protected conditions.

Seed note: Seeds are living material. Germination speed and percentage vary with seed age, storage, temperature, moisture and local conditions. Label the sowing date and treatment, keep the medium clean, and allow a reasonable period before judging the batch.
