About this species

Ficus religiosa is an accepted species in the mulberry family Moraceae. Kew records it as a tree native from south-eastern Pakistan to Myanmar and associated mainly with seasonally dry tropical habitats. It is widely known as peepal, sacred fig or bodhi tree and eventually develops a broad woody crown.

Sowing guide

1. Use a clean, fine, free-draining seed mix in a shallow tray or small pot.
2. Scatter the very small seeds over the surface and press them gently; do not bury them deeply.
3. Mist carefully and keep the medium evenly moist under bright, indirect light.
4. Maintain warmth and ventilation, protecting the surface from drying while avoiding stagnant saturation.

Fine Ficus seed is easily displaced by heavy watering. Bottom watering or a very gentle mist helps preserve even contact with the medium. Remove any cover gradually after emergence so seedlings adapt to normal air movement.

Seedling care

Give young seedlings bright light and increase direct sun gradually. Pot them on only when large enough to handle, lifting by the leaves rather than squeezing the stem. Use a well-drained mix and protect tender growth from cold.

This is a potentially large tree with an extensive root system. Confirm climate, local planting rules and available space before choosing a permanent outdoor position. Seedlings are naturally variable and should not be expected to duplicate a selected parent tree exactly.
