About this seed
Grow Himalayan fig (Ficus palmata), also known as Punjab fig or wild fig, from seed. This accepted species in the mulberry family (Moraceae) grows as a shrub or small tree. Its native range extends across parts of Western Asia, the Arabian Peninsula and northeastern tropical Africa, and from southeastern Nepal. It is associated with dry shrubland and produces small figs that mature to pinkish-purple tones.
Choose a packet of 50 or 100 seeds. Each packet contains the selected seed count; the two package sizes are offered as separate variations.
For sowing, use a clean, fine, free-draining seed-starting mix. Spread the small seeds across the moist surface, press them gently into contact with the mix and cover only very lightly. Keep the medium evenly moist rather than waterlogged. Place the container in warm, bright conditions away from harsh midday sun. A clear cover can help retain humidity, but ventilate it regularly to reduce stagnant moisture.
Fig seed germination can be variable, and results depend on seed freshness, temperature, moisture and growing conditions. Allow time for emergence and keep the surface from drying out. Once seedlings have several true leaves and are large enough to handle, transplant them carefully into individual containers. Increase light gradually as they establish.
Ficus palmata can be grown as an interesting fruiting tree for warm-climate gardens, protected patios or container culture where winter conditions require shelter. Seed-grown plants naturally vary, making each plant an individual.
