Growing from Seed
Sowing: Sow shallowly, about 6-10 mm deep, in fine seed compost or prepared garden soil. Keep the surface evenly moist while the seeds germinate. Choose locally suitable cool-season sowing dates, because hot, dry conditions can encourage lettuce to bolt and reduce leaf quality.
Spacing: Thin or transplant leaf-lettuce plants to approximately 10-15 cm apart. Closer spacing can be used when the crop will be harvested young; allow more room when growing larger rosettes.
Position: Grow in full sun or light shade in moderately fertile soil that holds moisture while draining freely. Containers are suitable when they are deep enough for the root system and watered consistently.
Watering: Maintain even soil moisture without leaving the roots waterlogged. Containers and exposed beds may need more frequent checks during warm or windy weather.
Harvest and Uses
Pick clean outer leaves as required while leaving the centre to continue growing, or harvest the whole rosette when it reaches the size you prefer. The frilled leaves add colour and texture to salads, sandwiches, wraps, and garnishes. Wash harvested leaves before serving.
What You Receive: One labelled packet containing 100 Lollo Rossa Red Leaf Lettuce seeds. This product contains seeds only, not seedlings or harvested lettuce.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Lollo Rossa a loose-leaf lettuce?
Yes. Lollo Rossa forms a loose rosette rather than a tight, solid head and is commonly grown for its decorative frilled leaves.
Can I harvest it as cut-and-come-again lettuce?
Yes. Pick the outer leaves without damaging the central growing point so the plant can continue producing leaves. Whole-rosette harvesting is also possible.
Can Lollo Rossa be grown in containers?
Yes. Use a container with drainage holes and sufficient depth, provide good light, and keep the compost evenly moist.
