About this seed

About this species

Callistemon viminalis is the familiar horticultural synonym on the source list; Plants of the World Online places it under the accepted name Melaleuca viminalis. This Australian member of the Myrtaceae family is recognised by narrow leaves, arching growth and cylindrical clusters of conspicuous red stamens.

Sowing guide

  1. Use a clean tray filled with a fine, free-draining seed medium.
  2. Distribute the dust-like seeds thinly over the surface and do not bury them deeply.
  3. Mist gently and keep the tray warm in bright, indirect light.
  4. Maintain even surface moisture with regular ventilation and avoid standing water.

Bottlebrush seed is extremely small. A level surface and gentle watering improve contact and reduce movement. Keep the label with the tray and thin crowded seedlings early enough to preserve air flow.

Seedling care

Move established seedlings gradually into stronger light. Pot on into a well-drained mix and water when the upper layer starts to dry. Young plants benefit from protection against hard frost and prolonged cold saturation.

Growth form varies from shrub-like to small tree-like depending on climate and cultivation. Choose a sunny position with adequate drainage and room for arching branches. Check local guidance where Australian Melaleuca species may naturalise.

Seed note: Seeds are living material. Germination speed and percentage vary with seed age, storage, temperature, moisture and local conditions. Label the sowing date and treatment, keep the medium clean, and allow a reasonable period before judging the batch.
