About this seed
The Ruffled Fan Palm (Licuala grandis, listed earlier as Pritchardia grandis; family Arecaceae) is a slow-growing palm with round, pleated, glossy leaves on a single slender trunk. It reaches 2–3 m, so it fits containers and small gardens. The packet holds 10 seeds.
Also known as: Licuala Palm.
Expect a long germination
The seed takes 3–6 months to germinate. Soak it in warm water for 24–48 hours first to soften the seed coat, then sow about 2.5 cm (1 inch) deep in well-draining potting mix and keep it moist and warm the whole time.
Shade, not sun
This palm prefers partial to full shade and accepts dappled light. Direct sun can scorch its leaves, so place it under cover, on a shaded patio or indoors in bright, indirect light.
Conditions it needs
- Temperature: 20–30 °C; it comes from tropical rainforest.
- Humidity: high; mist the leaves in dry rooms.
- Soil: rich, well-drained, slightly acidic, pH 6.0–6.5.
- Water: keep the soil evenly moist; avoid waterlogging.
- Feeding: balanced slow-release fertilizer during the growing season.
- Spacing: about 0.9–1.2 m (3–4 ft) between palms so the leaves do not overlap.
Origin
The species is native to the rainforests of Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands.
