Snapdragon (Antirrhinum majus) Mixed Colours
General Description
Snapdragon (Antirrhinum majus), also known as Dragon Flower, Calf’s Snout, Lion’s Mouth, Toad’s Mouth, and Bunny Rabbits, is a classic flowering plant cherished for its vibrant blooms and unique, dragon-like flowers that open and close when pinched, delighting gardeners of all ages. Native to the Mediterranean region, Snapdragon has a rich history of cultivation as an ornamental flower, popular in both cottage gardens and formal landscapes. The mixed colors variety includes a beautiful array of pink, red, yellow, orange, and white shades, offering endless possibilities for brightening garden spaces.
Plant Characteristics
Snapdragon grows to a height of 20–120 cm, depending on the variety. It forms upright, bushy plants with slender, lance-shaped green leaves. The tall flower spikes are densely packed with tubular blossoms that bloom sequentially from bottom to top, providing a long-lasting display of color. Blooming from spring to early autumn, Snapdragon is an excellent choice for adding height and structure to flower beds and borders.
Taste and Benefits
Snapdragons are not commonly consumed but are valued for their ornamental beauty and ability to attract pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. The flowers are sometimes used as a decorative garnish, though they have little flavor.
Cultivation Recommendations
Snapdragon thrives in full sun to partial shade and well-drained, fertile soil. Seeds should be sown indoors 8–10 weeks before the last frost or directly in the garden after the danger of frost has passed. Lightly press the seeds into the soil without covering, as they require light for germination. Keep the soil consistently moist until seedlings emerge, typically within 10–14 days. Deadheading spent blooms encourages continuous flowering, and moderate watering helps maintain healthy plants.
Uses and Benefits
Snapdragons are widely used in ornamental gardening, adding vertical interest and vibrant color to beds, borders, and containers. Their long-lasting flowers are excellent for cut arrangements and make charming additions to floral displays. With their ability to attract pollinators, Snapdragons also contribute to a thriving garden ecosystem.
Packaging
The seeds are carefully selected and packed in moisture-resistant packaging to ensure high germination rates and long-term viability.
