About this seed

About this species

Tabebuia rosea is an accepted Bignoniaceae species native from Mexico through Central America to tropical South America. Kew records it as a tree growing mainly in wet tropical habitats. It is widely known as pink trumpet tree or rosy trumpet tree and produces showy pink flower clusters followed by long capsules containing thin winged seeds.

Sowing guide

  1. Use fresh, intact winged seed and a clean tray of fine, free-draining propagation mix.
  2. Lay the seed flat on the surface and cover with only a very thin layer of medium.
  3. Mist gently and keep warm in bright, indirect light.
  4. Maintain even surface moisture and ventilation without deep burial or standing water.

Thin winged seed is easily washed into clumps and may lose viability during long or unsuitable storage. Sow promptly, use fine watering and keep the labelled surface undisturbed. Reduce humidity gradually after emergence.

Seedling care

Give seedlings bright light and introduce direct sun in stages. Thin crowded plants and pot them on before roots become restricted. Maintain warmth, free drainage and protection from frost during early development.

Pink trumpet tree can become a large, broad-crowned ornamental. Confirm climate, local planting guidance and suitable clearance from buildings and utilities. Seed-grown plants vary naturally, including in growth rate and eventual flowering characteristics.

Seed note: Seeds are living material. Germination speed and percentage vary with seed age, storage, temperature, moisture and local conditions. Label the sowing date and treatment, keep the medium clean, and allow a reasonable period before judging the batch.
