Growing American 572 from seed

The notes below are general guidance for Nicotiana tabacum seed. They are not measured results for a specific seed lot, and no seed specifications have been saved for this variety yet.

• Sowing: scatter the seed thinly on the surface of moist, fine seed-starting mix and press it in lightly. Do not bury it, because covering the seed blocks the light it needs.
• Moisture: keep the surface evenly damp. Water gently from below or with a fine mist so the tiny seeds stay in place.
• Warmth: Nicotiana is a warm-climate genus, so a warm, bright spot indoors suits the seed tray better than a cool windowsill.
• Timing: the plant is frost-tender, so start seed indoors ahead of the last frost in your area and move seedlings outside only once frost has passed.
• Thinning: because the seed is so fine, seedlings often come up crowded. Thin them so each plant has room as it grows.

Seedlings are small and slow at first. Give them plenty of light so they stay compact, and harden them off gradually before they go into the ground. A sunny bed with well-drained soil and room between plants suits a leafy annual of this kind.

Space and site planning

Nicotiana tabacum produces broad leaves, so the plants need air around them. Allow generous spacing between plants and choose a position in full sun. Because the height of American 572 is not recorded, check the plants as they grow and adjust staking or spacing to what you see rather than relying on a fixed figure.

What is not yet recorded

This listing does not yet include a germination percentage, a viability period, a seed size measurement or the origin of the variety. Those details are left out here rather than guessed. The gallery photographs have not all been reviewed against this variety, so this text makes no claims about what the plants in them look like.

FAQ

What conditions do American 572 seeds need to germinate?
