Greenwood Nicotiana Seeds

Greenwood is a Nicotiana tabacum variety, offered here as seed for growing the plant. The product card also gives the name Little Wood. It describes a robust, upright plant of roughly 5 to 6 ft (1.5 to 1.8 m) with broad, slightly puckered leaves that stay light green while the plant is growing. The card calls it adaptable to different climates when it is looked after properly, and the notes below follow that description.

Greenwood is the name this variety is listed under in our catalog.

Growing Greenwood from seed

Nicotiana seed is very fine, and it needs light to germinate. That is why it is placed on the surface of the soil and never buried. The figures below come from the variety description on the card and are approximate guides, not results measured on a particular seed lot.

• Sowing: press the seeds lightly onto the soil surface and do not cover them.
• Timing: the card suggests starting seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost.
• Soil: well-drained, fertile soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Adding organic matter is suggested.
• Light: full sunlight for the growing plants.
• Watering: keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
• Leaf picking: the card says leaves are taken individually as they mature, starting with the lower ones.

The surface layer of a seed tray dries out quickly, and tiny seed can wash together into clumps. Water gently, from below or with a fine mist, so the seeds stay where they were placed. Keep the tray in a bright spot. Once the seedlings have a few true leaves they can be thinned or pricked out so each one has room.

Space and site planning

A plant that can reach 5 to 6 ft needs light, air and a firm footing. A sunny bed with fertile, free-draining soil matches the card. The card does not give a spacing figure, so leave generous room around each plant and check how your first plants fill the bed before planting a larger number. A spot sheltered from strong wind helps tall, broad-leaved plants stay upright.

Because the card describes lower leaves being picked first, it also helps to keep the base of each plant easy to reach.

What is not yet recorded

No seed specifications have been saved for this variety yet, so this page does not state a germination percentage, a viability period, a seed size or a number of days to germinate. The origin of the variety, its flower color and its days to maturity are not confirmed beyond the product card, so they are left out rather than guessed. The photographs in the gallery have not all been reviewed against this variety, and this text makes no claims about what the plants in them look like beyond the card.

FAQ

How do I sow Greenwood seeds?

Place them on the surface of moist, well-drained soil and do not cover them. The seeds need light to germinate, so burying them works against the plant. Keep the surface moist with gentle watering.

When should I sow Greenwood?

The card suggests starting the seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost. Count back from your own last frost date, and move the seedlings outdoors only when the weather has warmed.

How tall does Greenwood grow?

The product card gives about 5 to 6 ft (1.5 to 1.8 m), with an upright habit and broad leaves. Actual height varies with light, soil, watering and season.
