Krupnolistniy 1187 Nicotiana Seeds

Krupnolistniy 1187 is a Nicotiana variety grown from seed and listed under the species Nicotiana tabacum, the cultivated Nicotiana of the nightshade family (Solanaceae). The name Krupnolistniy translates as "large-leaved", which points to a broad-leaf type. This page sets out what is recorded for the variety and how the seed of this species is sown, so you can decide whether it suits your garden.

About this variety

• Botanical name: Nicotiana tabacum, the species given on the product record.
• Variety name: Krupnolistniy 1187, kept as listed in our catalog. The number 1187 is part of that listed name.
• Leaf type: large-leaved, as the name says. We have no measured leaf size for this variety.
• Height, flower colour and days to maturity: not recorded for this variety, so we do not state them.

Across the species, Nicotiana tabacum is a tall herbaceous plant with large simple leaves and tubular flowers. In gardens it is usually grown as an annual from seed. Plants of the species commonly stand more than a metre tall, so plan the space before you sow. Treat that as a guide for the species, not a measurement of this variety.

Growing Krupnolistniy 1187 from seed

The seed of Nicotiana is dust-fine and needs light to germinate. It is never buried: scatter it over the surface of a fine, moist seed mix and press it in lightly so it makes contact with the mix.

• Sowing depth: on the surface only, with no covering.
• Spreading the seed: mixing it with a little fine dry sand makes an even sowing easier.
• Moisture: keep the mix damp but not waterlogged. Mist from above or water from below so the seed is not washed together.
• Warmth and light: keep the tray warm and bright while the seed sprouts. The seedlings are tender and are damaged by frost.
• Thinning: once the seedlings have true leaves, move them singly into their own cells or pots.

We have not recorded a sowing temperature, an emergence time or a tested germination rate for this variety, so none is given here.

Transplanting and space

Start the plants indoors and set them outside only after the last frost has passed, in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. A variety named for its large leaves needs room: give each plant space so the leaves do not crowd one another and air can move between them. Water regularly while the plants establish.

FAQ

What conditions does the seed need to sprout?

Light, warmth and steady moisture. Sow on the surface without covering the seed and keep the mix damp. Because the seed is so fine, a gentle misting is safer than a watering can.

When should I sow it?

Sow indoors ahead of the last frost in your area and move the seedlings outside only once frost is no longer expected. We have no variety-specific sowing date to give, because none is recorded on the product record.

How big does the plant get?

The name describes large leaves, and the species commonly passes a metre in height. We have no measured height or leaf size for Krupnolistniy 1187 itself, so allow generous space and judge the final size from your own plants.
