Trapezond-92 Nicotiana Seeds

Trapezond-92 is a cultivar of Nicotiana tabacum, listed by Deodar Seeds under the name Nicotiana Trapezond-92. The product notes describe it as an Oriental-type variety from the Black Sea region. The plant grows to about 3-4 feet (0.9-1.2 m) tall, with small, thin, light green leaves and delicate pink flowers in late summer. This page explains how the seed is sown and how the plant is grown, so you can decide whether it suits your garden.

About the plant

• Species: Nicotiana tabacum, a leafy annual in the nightshade family (Solanaceae).
• Height: about 3-4 feet (0.9-1.2 m) at maturity.
• Leaves: small, thin and light green, slightly crinkled.
• Flowers: delicate and pink, opening in late summer.
• Site: warm, sunny climates with well-drained soil; sandy soil suits it well.

The listing includes photographs of the plant, so you can look at the leaf shape and growth habit before you order. With a moderate height, Trapezond-92 does not need as much vertical space as the tallest Nicotiana cultivars, but it still needs a bright, open position. Choose a spot that gets full sun for most of the day and where water drains away quickly after rain.

Growing Trapezond-92 from seed

The seed needs light to germinate, so it must stay on the surface of the soil and should not be buried. The steps below follow the sowing guidance in the product notes.

• When to sow: start the seed indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost.
• How to sow: fill a tray with fine, moist seed-starting mix, place the seed on the surface and press it in lightly. Do not cover it with soil.
• Temperature: keep the tray at about 75 °F (24 °C).
• Moisture: keep the soil moist, but not waterlogged. Water gently or from below so the seed stays in place.
• Germination: seedlings typically appear within 7-14 days.
• Transplanting: move the young plants outdoors after the last frost.
• Spacing: set plants 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) apart.
• Site: full sun and sandy, well-drained soil.

A simple way to plan the season is to count back from your last frost date. Sow indoors six to eight weeks earlier, expect the first seedlings within one to two weeks, and keep the tray warm and bright while they grow. When the frost risk has passed, plant them out at the recommended spacing. Because the plant flowers in late summer, an early start gives it the full warm season to develop.

Choosing a spot in the garden

Give each plant enough space for light and air to reach the leaves. Crowded plants compete with each other, so keep to the spacing above. Sandy, well-drained soil matches the conditions given in the product notes, and a warm, sunny position helps the plant reach its expected height.
