Virginia 310 Nicotiana Seeds

Virginia 310 is a variety of Nicotiana tabacum, the cultivated Nicotiana plant. The plant is described as tall and upright, reaching about 5 to 6 feet (1.5 to 1.8 meters), with long, narrow, smooth leaves. In late summer it produces delicate pink flowers. This listing is for seeds of the plant, for gardeners and collectors who want to grow Virginia 310 from seed and follow it through a full season, from a tiny seedling to a flowering plant.

About the variety

• Species: Nicotiana tabacum.
• Variety name: Virginia 310.
• Height: up to about 5 to 6 feet (1.5 to 1.8 meters).
• Leaves: long and narrow, smooth and slightly oily to the touch.
• Flowers: delicate pink, appearing in late summer.
• Preferred conditions: warm, sunny climates and well-drained soil.

Because the plant grows tall and carries a lot of foliage, give it room in the garden and plan the position before transplanting. A sunny, sheltered bed with fertile, well-drained soil suits it best.

Growing Virginia 310 from seed

• Start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost in your area.
• Sow on the surface of the soil and press the seeds in lightly. Do not bury them, because they need light to germinate.
• Keep the temperature around 75 degrees F (24 degrees C) and keep the soil moist.
• Seedlings usually appear within 7 to 14 days.
• Move young plants outdoors only after the last frost has passed.
• Space plants 2 to 3 feet apart in full sun, in well-drained, fertile soil.
• Water regularly and feed the plants occasionally while they grow.

Nicotiana seed is very fine, so sow thinly and mist the surface instead of pouring water over it. A clear cover over the tray helps keep the surface evenly moist until the first leaves open. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them or move them to individual pots so each plant has space to develop a strong root system before it goes outside.

Planting out and care

Harden the seedlings off gradually over several days before transplanting, so they adjust to direct sun and wind. After planting out, keep the soil evenly moist and remove weeds around the stems. The plant responds to regular watering and occasional feeding, and it develops best in warm weather. Because it reaches 1.5 to 1.8 meters, a windy site may call for a stake or some shelter.
