Growing Virginia Hugo Leaf from seed

Nicotiana seed is dust-fine and needs light to germinate, so it is never buried. The figures below come from the cultivation notes on the card and are approximate guides, not measurements from a particular seed lot.

• Timing: start the seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost.
• Sowing: press the seeds lightly onto the soil surface and leave them uncovered.
• Soil: fertile, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0 to 7.0; the card suggests mixing in organic matter.
• Light and water: full sun, with regular watering that keeps the soil moist without soaking it.

Because the seed is so small, the surface layer dries out quickly. Water gently, from below or with a fine mist, so the seeds stay in place instead of washing together. Seedlings move outdoors only once frost has passed.

Space and site planning

A plant that can reach 6 to 7 feet with leaves the length of a forearm needs room and shelter from strong wind. Choose a sunny bed with fertile soil and good drainage, and leave enough space between plants for air to move and for the broad lower leaves to open fully. Adding compost before planting follows the card's advice on organic matter.

What is not yet recorded

No seed specifications have been saved for this variety yet, so this page does not state a germination percentage, a germination temperature, a viability period or a seed size. The origin of the variety and its days to maturity are not documented on the card either, so they are left out rather than guessed. The photographs in the gallery have not all been checked against this variety, so the text makes no claims about the plants in them beyond the card.

FAQ

How do I sow Virginia Hugo Leaf seeds?

Press them lightly onto the surface of moist, fertile soil and do not cover them. The seeds need light to germinate, and burying them works against the plant. Keep the surface evenly moist while they sprout.

When should I sow Virginia Hugo Leaf?

The card recommends starting seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost in your area. Seedlings go outside after the last frost has passed. No germination time is recorded for this variety, so judge each tray by the seedlings rather than by a fixed number of days.

How tall does Virginia Hugo Leaf grow?

The card gives about 6 to 7 feet (1.8 to 2.1 m), with leaves up to 24 inches long and 12 inches wide. Real plants vary with light, soil, spacing and season, so treat these figures as a description of the variety, not a promise for every plant.
