About this seed
Alpine aster (Aster alpinus) is a low perennial for rock gardens, 15–30 cm tall, with violet daisy flowers 3–5 cm across that open in late spring to early summer. The seed needs light, so it is pressed onto the surface, not buried. The packet holds 20 seeds.
Also known as: Violet daisy chamomile, Alpine aster, Alpen-Aster (German), Aster des Alpes (French). Despite the trade name, it is an aster, not a chamomile.
Sow on the surface
- Sow indoors in early spring, or directly outside after the last frost.
- Press the seed lightly onto the soil and do not cover it: it needs light to germinate.
- Keep the surface moist; seedlings usually appear in 14–21 days.
Light and soil
Full sun to partial shade in well-drained, moderately fertile soil. It tolerates rocky or sandy ground and dry spells once established. Space plants 20–30 cm apart so air can move between the clumps.
What the plant looks like
It forms compact clumps of narrow, lance-shaped leaves. The flowers are violet, purple or lavender with golden-yellow centres and draw bees and butterflies. It flowers before many other perennials; removing spent flowers lengthens the display.
What you get
One packet of 20 Aster alpinus seeds. We do not state a germination percentage for this lot.
