About this seed

About Indian jujube

Ziziphus mauritiana is an accepted species in the Rhamnaceae family. Kew describes it as a tree of seasonally dry tropical regions with a broad native range across Africa and Asia. It is known for rounded leaves, small flowers and stone fruits that vary among seed-grown plants.

Sowing guide

  1. The hard stone around the seed can slow water uptake. Soak cleaned stones in water and inspect them before sowing.
  2. Use a warm, well-drained seed mix in individual pots or a deep tray.
  3. Cover to roughly the thickness of the stone, water gently and keep evenly moist.
  4. Provide warmth and bright light while avoiding stagnant, saturated conditions.

Hard-coated seed can germinate irregularly. Allow time, keep labels in place and avoid repeated digging that can damage a developing root.

Seedling care

When growth is established, increase sun gradually and let the top of the mix begin to dry between waterings. The species is associated with warm and seasonally dry habitats, but young container plants still need consistent care while their root systems develop.

Seedlings are genetically variable and may not match the fruit quality or growth habit of a named cultivated selection. Handle plants carefully, because young shoots may carry spines. Before outdoor planting, confirm climate fit and provide enough room for a woody crown.

Seed note: Seeds are living material. Germination speed and percentage vary with seed age, temperature, moisture and local growing conditions. Keep a small record of sowing date and treatment so you can adjust the next batch.
