Thyme Seeds

Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) is a low, woody perennial herb, 15–30 cm tall. Its seed is slow and needs light: surface-sow and allow 14–28 days at 18–24 °C. The packet holds 50 seeds.

Sowing

• Sow in trays or directly into well-drained soil in spring.
• Scatter on the surface and press lightly; do not bury, as the seed needs light.
• Keep at 18–24 °C; germination takes 14–28 days.

Light and soil

Full sun gives the strongest flavour. Plant in well-draining sandy or rocky soil, neutral to slightly alkaline, 20–30 cm apart. Feed little: an occasional dose of compost is enough.

The usual mistake: too much water

Once established, thyme prefers dry conditions. Water sparingly and never leave the soil waterlogged.

Harvest and trimming

Pick fresh leaves as needed through the season. For drying, cut stems before flowering for the strongest flavour and aroma. Trim regularly to keep the plant bushy and stop it turning woody. The small purple or pink flowers attract bees.

What you get

One packet of 50 Thymus vulgaris seeds. We do not state a germination percentage for this lot.

FAQ

Why is thyme slow to come up?

It normally takes 14–28 days even at 18–24 °C; covering the seed slows it further.

When should I cut thyme for drying?

Before flowering, when flavour and aroma are strongest.
